A Dangerous Ray!

To us, a cownose ray is a harmless creature that you'd pet at the aquarium. To the twentieth century mind, the ray was a dangerous animal to be approached only with loaded spear gun! Ladybird books like this one from 1967 were a midcentury staple for British children. In the US, kids learned to fear rays by reading Scott O'Dell's The Black Pearl.
