Louis Renard's Poissons, Ecrevisses et Crabes, de Diverses Couleurs et Figures Extraordinaires (1754)

Renard published his book of fishes having never left the Netherlands using Samuel Fallour's original illustrations as a source. While known for its fanciful elaborations (and its depiction of a mermaid!), many of the fishes in Renard's text are readily recognizable, almost mundane, especially when seen in context of the entire volume.
