Gasping for Air in the Manhattan Dome

In 1959, futurist Buckminster Fuller proposed that a dome be built over Manhattan as a form of climate control (above). Inspired by the idea, sci-fi author Ben Bova wrote "Manhattan Dome," a short story imagining the dome enclosure as filled with thick exhaust, cigarette smoke and "clouds of aerosols," while people collapse on the sidewalk "wheezing and gasping" for air.
